Residential Gas Line Installation FAQ

As a residential heating and cooling company, we get a lot of questions about what homeowners can expect during gas line installation. To help you make informed decisions about your home, we have listed these questions below for your convenience. Feel free to give us a call if you have more questions.

Why would I need gas line installation?

One of the most common reasons for gas line installation is a homeowner wants to replace electric or oil appliances for ones powered by gas. In general, gas appliances tend to be more energy efficient and less expensive in the long run.

You may need a new residential gas line if you want the following added to your property:

  • Gas furnace installation
  • Gas water heater installation
  • Gas stove installation
  • Outdoor lighting
  • Outdoor grill
  • Can I install a gas line by myself?

Gas line installation is not for amateurs. If you don’t have extensive experience with gas line installation and repair, we highly recommend you contact a licensed heating and cooling contractor in your area. Natural gas leaks caused by mistakes during installation are a serious health hazard and a threat to your home.

While we understand wanting to save money where you can, mistakes during gas line installation could have deadly consequences. To avoid explosions, personal injury, and destruction to your home, we recommend you hire professional gas line installation contractors.

How much will gas line installation cost?

According to HomeAdvisor.com, the average cost of gas pipe installation and repair is between $259 and $753. Costs can vary based on materials, labor, and difficulty of installation. For example, where the gas pipes are installed can determine how much technical experience is needed by the contractor to complete the job.

How can I find the gas lines on my property?

Michigan residents will need to notify MISS DIG at least three business days before excavation. MISS DIG is Michigan’s call center for notifying all affected underground utility companies of your planned dig. Upon notification, these utility companies should come out to your property to mark all underground pipes, cables, and lines.

A licensed gas line installation contractor will then do the digging for you. We do NOT recommend digging on your own because you run the risk of rupturing a gas pipe.

Are permits required?

Yes. Your contractor will need to apply for the permits required in your area. After the gas line is installed, your contractor will also need to schedule a natural gas line inspection so you can be sure your new line is safe and code-compliant.

Who should I trust with gas line installation?

Before hiring a gas line installation contractor, we recommend doing your research. While we understand doing research on natural gas line installation companies probably isn’t what you want to do during your weekend, it can save you a lot of grief.

Make sure you ask for references from prospective heating and cooling companies. A reputable gas line installation company will be able to provide recent references similar to your project. Also, make sure that the company you choose has the appropriate license for natural gas line installation in your state.
